CATALYZING A MORE VIBRANT URBAN FABRIC

An homage to the city of Austin, Canopy Hotel is an infill project turned urban retreat that merges the vibrant, artistic energy of the West 6th Street neighborhood with the unique natural setting of Austin’s Hill Country. The 6-story boutique hotel features 140 guest rooms and underground parking along with shared spaces designed to immerse guests in the neighborhood. A bar and restaurant open up to West 6th while a lush pool deck and flexible event room overlook the city from the second level.

Canopy Hotel Austin — Lake Flato

A primary project goal was to reintroduce and restore native vegetation to the previously developed site, which had no water resource features. The design team increased the amount of outdoor space and integrated those spaces throughout the design, aiming to restore natural hydrological features typically associated with the local environment. A lush courtyard was designed with natural materials, greenery, and water, serving as the anchor of the property.

Ashley led this project while at Lake|Flato Architects (Design Architect), overseeing all aspects of the design and coordination through DD, at which point the AOR came on-board and Ashley continued in an advisory role through CA. Her concept diagrams, created when she helped win the project at the initial interview, guided the entire design process, keeping the final building true to the goals of enriching this particular urban landscape with a layered set of experiences, moving from street to courtyard to hotel. This was one of the first projects to be designed by the team in the Lake|Flato’s Austin office, a team which Ashley helped start and grow from a team of 5 to 25.
