INNOVATING DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION FOR RESILIENCY

House Zero is a demonstration project and field trial for ICON’s proprietary concrete wall printing system. Perhaps more importantly, House Zero is a compelling and climate-responsive new home connecting its inhabitants to a native Texas landscape and evolving Austin neighborhood fabric. Designed for net-zero energy, guided by biophilic design principles, and built for resilience, the project allows for the flexibility of ever-evolving patterns that a family experiences over the course of a lifetime.

We collaborated intensely with software developers, robotics engineers, and material scientists to help craft the design and innovative strategies required for printed concrete construction. Our focus was on “future-proofing” the home to the extent possible by keeping concrete where it works best (largely the outer envelope, which can last 100+ years and has robust thermal performance) while pairing it with the warmth of sustainably-harvested wood (which can be adapted more easily to evolving living conditions in the future).
